Hong is relatively new on the job when his own wife, who is bearing a child, becomes ill and ultimately passes away. Racked with sadness and grief, he strives a bargain with the yaoguai, demonic entities who offer services for a price. Though the yaoguai were ultimately banished due to consuming too many souls, they did offer best services to Hong’s father, and they promise the same to Hong: they can resurrect his dead wife.

But the promise is not a cheap one, and now Hong must strike an impossible balance. Can he continue to rule with a strong hand and remain positive in the public eye while also feeding his subjects to the demons to save his empress?
